A Level Chemistry at Theale Green School

A2 Units are
There is no typical lesson in Chemistry. In the space of one week you could be performing a titration to estimate the concentration of chloride ions in sea water, modelling the shapes of molecules using plasticine or balloons and giving a presentation on the history of the atom. You can expect to do some practical work at least every other lesson.
To be successful in Chemistry you need to be disciplined, have strong independent study skills and be prepared to do extra reading and note-taking outside of the lesson and in addition to homework. Strong Maths skills are desirable, as is an aptitude for problem solving. Units 1 and 2 are assessed by written exams – 1 hour for Unit 1 and 1 hour 45 minutes for Unit 2.
There are some extended answer questions but no essay writing. At A2 there are some more challenging questions which will allow the award of an A* grade at A level for students achieving 90% or higher on A2 units. Internal practical assessments contribute 20% towards the final grade at both AS and A level. Several of these will take place throughout the year, with the best marks counting towards the final grade.
Minimum B grade in GCSE Core Science and GCSE additional science (or BBB from separate sciences) + B or higher in GCSE Maths.
