AS Level Biology at The Rugeley Sixth Form Academy
The course encourages Candidates to: •Develop essential knowledge and understanding of concepts of biology, and the skills needed for the use of these in new and changing situations. •Develop an understanding of scientific methods. •Be aware of advances in technology, including information technology, relevant to biology. •Recognise the value and responsible use of biology in society. •Sustain and develop their enjoyment of, and interest in biology. In addition, the A level specification encourages candidates to: •Show knowledge and understanding of facts, principles and concepts from different areas of biology and to make and use connections between them. What students do after successful completion: •Go on to University to read Biology, Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Biological Science and Biochemistry. Biology may also be studied in combination with such subjects as French, English, Economics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography, Psychology and Physics. •Use Biology as one of their A-levels to read other subjects at University. •Go into employment in such fields as agriculture, animal care, health science and medical laboratories food production, catering, cosmetics and teaching.
To study AS level Biology at the Academy students must have achieved a grade B or above at GCSE level and be literate and numerate.
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses that may overlap with Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Biology, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology such as a Doctor, Nurse, Science Technician or Marine Biologist. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for. You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which overlap with Biology such as Chemistry, Applied Science, Physics, Geography, Geology or more general subjects that may not relate to the sciences, to prepare for higher education. With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Marine Biologist. The course will also help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
