Course description

The AS course is studied on the modular theme. The modules to be covered are • Biology and disease (covering pathogens, digestion, exchange on substances, breathing, circulatory system, blood, biological principles and investigative and practical skills) • The Variety of Living Organisms (covering genetics, environment, DNA, genetic diversity, biochemistry, cellular organisation, mitosis, transport systems, mutation and biodiversity) • Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Biology These topics will build on what you have already learned at GCSE and will introduce you to new principles and concepts.

5 GCSEs grade C or above.

Grade B or above in GCSE science (additional or separate). Grade C or above in English and Maths.

Future opportunities

After studying the biology A-level students often move into higher education to read various degrees, often in the science or mathematical fields. Biology qualifications can lead onto varied and high paying careers in many scientific fields such as the life sciences, medicine, food industry, pharmacology, biological science, water industry, forensics, pharmacy etc. Biologists are also highly valued in the fields of accountancy, finance, marketing, journalism and teaching. To maximise your chances of getting into the best universities you should combine Biology with two other science-based subjects (such as Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics).
