A-level Biology is a challenging, rewarding course that helps students develop skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career

Course content

What will the student study?

Topic 1: Biological molecules

Topic 2: Cells

Topic 3: Organisms and exchanges with the environment

Topic 4: Genetics

Topic 5: Energy transfers

Topic 6: Responding to the environment

Topic 7: Evolution and ecosystems

Topic 8: Control of genes

Entry requirements

Biology grade B or Core and Additional Science both at grade B (with a minimum of grade B in the B1 and B2 units)

Mathematics grade B


Exam paper 1: Topics 1-4. 35% of A level grade.

Exam paper 2: Topics 5-8. 35% of A level grade.

Exam paper 3: All topics, including practical skills and a scientific essay.

Practical work:

Students will be expected to complete a number of assessed practical investigations over the course. If these are passed, students will be awarded a ‘Practical Skills Endorsement’ by AQA.
