Mathematics AS level at Beechwood School

Course description

This course introduces students to a range of mathematical topics which are all widely applied in Science and Technology in the modern world. The backbone of Mathematics is algebra, and the AS and A2 Mathematics course builds on the algebraic concepts and methods taught at A and A* level in GCSE Maths. It goes on to explore a range of topics at a much higher level, including functions, and transformations, trigonometry, numerical methods and calculus, (the study of the properties of curves). Teaching methods are similar to those at GCSE with regular testing and assignments and feedback to enable a student track and improve their progress.

The course is broken down into three modules at AS and three modules at A2. The four core modules build on each other taking each topic to a higher level in successive modules. The modules in statistics and decision maths teach students to apply their mathematical knowledge to analyse and explain the real world. Each module is assessed by an exam and take the form of six to ten problems to be solved, some of which involve drawing graphs or diagrams. In the Statistics module and Decision Maths module students may have to give a short written explanation.

Course content

Core 1: Algebra and Functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration.

Core 2: Algebra and Functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration

Statistics 1: Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution.

Future opportunities

An A level in Mathematics is highly regarded by Universities. It is essential for students applying for a Mathematics or Statistics degree, and highly desirable for students applying for any Science degree as well as Psychology, Medicine, Nursing, Computing, Gaming, Business and Finance.
