Applied Science Diploma Level 1 at West Suffolk College

Course description

This vocational course introduces learners to all the key areas relating to applied science. The structure of the course provides a real feel and insight into scientific careers. Throughout the course, opportunities are provided to develop a variety of science skills such as; laboratory skills, healthy living and working in the science sector. A career in science is bought to life through a variety of activities to see science in action, giving a real insight into the possibilities a career in science can bring.

Course content

Learners are timetabled for three days per week and classes run between 9.15am and 4.45pm. Units include Making and Testing Cosmetic Products, The Study of Living Systems & Using Equipment to Make Scientific Observations. The course will include experiments, group activities and trips.

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.

 

Entry requirements

Entry is by interview. Applicants will need to be motivated and show a genuine interest in science. In order to achieve the Level 1 Diploma, learners will need to have a mature and responsible outlook to their studies.

Free for 16 to 18 year olds.

Future opportunities

The course is well suited to learners who would like to progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science, along with GCSE Mathematics and English.

Further information

Students will achieve either a Level 1 or Level 2 in Mathematics and English Functional Skills and a BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Applied Science. Laboratory coats will be available to purchase at the start of the programme.
