Course content

Unit One

Particles, Quantum Phenomena & Electricity

You will study many varied particles including hadrons, leptons and quarks. Quantum work includes photoelectricity and photon emission. Electrical circuits, resistivity and components are looked at from a practical point of view.

Unit Two

Mechanics, Materials & Waves

Mechanics includes projectile motion, moments, Newton’s laws, forces and energy. Properties of materials includes density and the Young modulus. The Waves section focuses on longitudinal and transverse waves, refraction, and interference.

Unit Three

Investigative & Practical Skills for AS Physics

You will carry out experimental and investigative activities to develop your practical skills. These include taking observations and recording measurements before processing, analysing and evaluating them.

Entry requirements

You will have studied GCSE Science with GCSE Additional Science (not Applied Science) and gained a grade BB, or GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics and achieved grade B.

Mathematics is very important to successful study at AS and A Level Physics, and students are required to have an ongoing interest and ability in the subject.

It will be compulsory for you to study AS Level Maths alongside AS Physics.

Assessment

The AS is the first half of an A level course.

Candidates must complete the following three units in order to gain an AS qualification:
