Children and Young People’s Workforce Apprenticeship at Buxton & Leek College

Course description

You will go through a structured training programme that teaches all aspects of caring for children and young people, working alongside experienced staff to learn the skills you need. All aspects of childcare, health and safety, communication and professional development will be covered. You will explore current initiatives and issues regarding childcare and learn how to provide the best outcomes for the children in your care. Learners should be 16+ and want to combine practical experience with classroom study.

Course content

All the Childcare staff at the College have worked in various aspects of childcare so we have first-hand experience of the job role. We are a supportive and approachable team who want you to succeed and have the best experience of college life. Our Apprenticeship groups are small which helps in building close relationships with your peers and fosters a ‘working together’ approach. 

At the Buxton Campus we have a skills suite where you can practice your practical skills in readiness for the workplace. We also have the latest classroom technology to support your learning and you will have access to all the facilities and services of the university campus. Buxton & Leek College have an extensive enrichment programme. The Childcare department also arrange visits many educational trips and visits.

Entry requirements

You will need to provide the name of at least one person to give you a character reference and evidence of a satisfactory DBS check. You will also undertake an initial capability assessment to achieve Level 1 English, Maths and ICT.

Assessment

You will build a portfolio of evidence to meet the course criteria. This evidence can be from reflective accounts of your experience in the workplace, written work, observation by your assessor and witness statements from your work supervisor. There are no exams for this qualification.

Future opportunities

You may be able to progress on to a Level 3 Childcare Practitioner qualification or progress into employment in a nursery setting.

      The campus boasts a fine dining restaurant, hair and beauty salons and a bistro café area at The Dome. All the commercial operations are open to students, staff and the general public, helping to provide real world experiences.

      Our Skillsbase Training Centre, based at Harpur Hill on the outskirts of Buxton is the perfect location for motor vehicle, construction, logistics, warehousing and painting and decorating.
