Applied Science (Biomedical) Btec Diploma at Alexandra Park School
BTECS offer practical experience that is often lacking in more traditional routes such as GCE AS/A2 Levels. This course allows students to
- develop their vocational practical skills
- follow scientific procedures in a logical and safe manner
- observe and record data accurately and present information concisely.
The course consists of three mandatory units plus two optional units completed over 2 years. Three of the units are assessed through coursework which is internally assessed and externally moderated. One unit is an external exam. This course takes place in one option block and is broadly equivalent to one A level.
This course can only be taken by students who are also taking the Applied Science course. Students who have studied 21st century Science should have a minimum of grade C in both GCSE Core Science and GCSE Additional Science (or equivalent if students have studied other suites of GCSE courses). Students who study BTEC Level 2 Science will need to have achieved a Merit. A minimum of C grade in Maths GCSE and a C grade in English GCSE are also expected.
Students who study the course can access a wide range of higher education and work opportunities. The topics studied and methods of study used enable students to organise their own work and make their own decisions which are much sought after skills. Combined with other AS and A-Level subjects the course will enable students to gain entry to a range of science and science related subjects such as health, nursing and pharmaceutical sciences. The course is also an excellent entry path into a range of scientifically related work opportunities where further training will be available.
