Maths A Level at Don Valley School and Performing Arts College

Course description

In this course you will learn how to represent situations mathematically and develop an understanding of the relationship between ‘real world’ problems and standard mathematical models. Topics will be developed using a range of strategies. The first Core Mathematics module is a non calculator module but effective use of both graphical and scientific calculators also forms an important part of the course.

Students are required to take 3 modules for an AS Level and 6 modules for an A Level. The AS examinations are taken in year one and then students may continue the subject through into Year 13 and convert their AS Level into a "full" A Level by taking an additional 3 modules and the A2 examinations in year two.

For AS Mathematics students must take two Core Mathematics modules and one Applied Mathematics module. The Applied module can be Statistics, Mechanics or Discrete Mathematics. Familiar topics such as Algebra and Trigonometry will be revisited and extended.

For A Level Mathematics students must take a further two Core Mathematics modules and a second Applied Mathematics module. The Applied module can be Statistics, Mechanics or Discrete Mathematics depending upon which module was studied in Year 12.
