Painting and Decorating Occupations - Level 3 Apprenticeship at Middlesbrough College

Course description

Apprenticeships allow 16+ year olds to start work and earn a wage, while learning new skills that lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are designed with the help of employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes Apprentices through the skills needed to do a job well. Most of an Apprentice's training takes place on the job but they will also have to complete off-the-job training within the College. Painting and Decorating Occupation Apprentices work towards a work-based NVQ qualification in addition to the nationally recognised Construction Diploma. Areas to be covered:- Knowledge Based Qualification (Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating) You will study theory and practical sessions. Example of General core units:- Information Quantities and Communicating with Others Building Methods and Construction Technology Carryout Safe Working Practices in Construction Carryout Paint Systems by Brush and Roller Produce Specialist Decorative Finishes Apply Water Borne Paint Systems Using High Volume Low Pressure Erect and Dismantle Access Equipment and Working Platforms Prepare for Decorate a Room Including Doors and Balusters Carryout Specialist Architectural Feature Work Competence Based Qualification (Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Painting and Decorating ) General core units:- Confirming Work Activities and Resources Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships Erecting and Dismantling Access and Working Platforms Preparing Surfaces for Painting and Decorating Applying Paint Systems to Complex Surfaces by Brush Hanging Wall Coverings to Complex Surfaces Conforming to General Health & Safety and Welfare in the Workplace Example of Optional units:- Hanging Wide Width Vinyl’s Installing Coving, Centre Pieces and Texture Products Applying Coatings by The Airless Spray Method Producing and Applying Complex Stencil Designs Producing Basic Brush Graining and Marbling Effects Producing Comb Textured Finishes. English and Maths up to Level 2 Maths English Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) The Apprentice National Minimum Wage applies to all 16 to 18 year old Apprentices and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. If the Apprentice is aged 19 and / or has completed the first year of their Apprenticeship, the employer must pay the National Minimum Wage appropriate for their age. Entry requirements

No specific academic requirements but employment as a trainee in Painting and Decorating Occupations is essential. Applicants will be required to complete an initial assessment to determine their current learning level. "If you do not have a Grade A to C in English and/or Maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your Study Programme."

Assessment

The NVQ is assessed through work-based evidence compiled as an electronic portfolio. The Diploma is assessed on practical assignments, unit end tests and an online exam.

Future opportunities

At the end of the programme, Apprentices will have achieved the Construction Skills NVQ Level 3 in Painting and Decorating Occupations and the Construction Skills Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating. Apprentices will also have the opportunity to complete Functional Skills that will help develop important skills - like communication, team working, presentation and problem solving. On completion of the Painting and Decorating Occupations Apprenticeship at Level 3, Apprentices can go into other industrial occupations, building supervisory and management roles within the Construction Industry.
