Course description

Outline of AS Syllabus
Candidates are expected to study:
Unit 6B101: Lifestyle, Transport, Genes and Health: Covers basic biochemistry, including
nucleics acid and protein synthesis, gene mutations and gene therapy.
Unit 6B102: Development, Plants and the Environment: Includes the ultra structure of cells,
stem cell research and biodiversity.
Unit 6B103: Practical Biology and Research Skills: Students write a report of between 1500
and 2000 words either as a record of a visit to a site of biological interest or on research into a
biological topic.
Outline of A2 Syllabus
Candidates are expected to study:
Unit 6B104: The Natural Environment and Species Survival: Includes evolution, DNA profiling,
the structure of bacteria and viruses, infectious diseases (e.g. AIDS and TB) and immunology.
Unit 6B105: Energy, Exercise and Coordination: Includes respiration, the impact of exercise
on the body, brain structure and development and the Human Genome Project.
Unit 6B106: Practical Biology and Investigative Skills: Devise and carry out an experimental
investigation. Write report on it of between 2700 and 3300 words.

Entry requirements

• Grade BB in Double Science.
• At least grade C in English and Maths (preferably Bs).
