Design and Technology: Product Design at North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College

Course description

If your strengths are in creativity and innovation then design technology could be for you.

This is an exciting and challenging curriculum where you will have access to a range of materials and technologies and encouraged to apply your learning to designing your own product while looking at the impact that product design has on society, and learning about industrial processes and practices. The key focus of this course is on resistant materials.

This course will give you a good grounding in both design work and a good working knowledge of manufacturing. Through studying design technology you will also develop additional skills valued by employers and universities including: team working, developing imagination, innovation and flair and entrepreneurial, problem-solving and technological skills.

Course content

This course gives you the chance to get creative and innovative as you develop your product design skills and learn about the complex relationships between design, materials, manufacturing and marketing as you cover all aspects of the design process. You will explore new technologies and look at how the latest innovations are being used in the next generation of products. You will carry out a major design project, producing a design portfolio and  - a final product.

  • Advanced innovation challenge
  • Product study
  • Design, make and evaluate
  • Product design.

Throughout the course there will be a strong emphasis on practical learning, and using latest technologies. There will be opportunities to apply your learning in real life briefs provided by our partners.

Entry requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs A*-C, including one in a DT/art-based subject.

Future opportunities

Design Technology will combine with many of the other subjects you can study at NSETC.

You will be able to go on to develop your skills in Higher and Further Education and in employment, especially in creative and manufacturing industries.
