Performing Arts Intermediate Extended Certificate at Derby College

Course description

This course is an ideal starting point for anyone who wants to learn more about the performing arts industry.  You will not only develop your practical skills, including performing your own work, but you will also gain a deeper understanding of professional practice in this rewarding and fascinating sector.

In order to support your main study programme, future progression and life skills, you will also develop your skills in maths and English.

Course content

  • Preparation, Performance and Production
  • The Performing Arts Industry
  • Acting Skills
  • Dance Skills
  • Exploring Improvisation
  • Devising Performance Work
  • Performing Scripted Plays
  • Contemporary Dance Techniques
  • Exploring Urban Dance Styles
  • English or Maths (if necessary)

Entry requirements

You will need at least four GCSEs at grade D or above, along with a minimum grade C in either English Language or Maths.  In addition, you will need to attend a full-day audition, where your practical skills will be assessed.


Assessment is via a series of practical and theory-based assignments throughout the year, including external assessment.

Maths and English will be assessed through either controlled assessments or a final exam.

Future opportunities

The range of performance skills you will gain, together with your deeper understanding of the industry, will stand you in good stead for working in the sector.

Provided you pass all the required units at Merit or Distinction level, have a grade C in English and demonstrate aptitude for this exciting subject, you could progress to a Level 3 course.
