Business Studies A Level at QE Academy Trust

Course description

We cannot promise that an A‐level in Business will make you a millionaire by the time you are 21.  It will however provide an exciting insight into the dynamic world of business.  Students are encouraged to use an enquiring, critical and thoughtful approach to the study of business, to understand that business behaviour can be studied from a range of perspectives and to challenge assumptions.

Course content

Theme 1:  Marketing and People
Students will develop an understanding of:  
- meeting customer needs
- the market
- marketing mix and strategy
- managing people
-entrepreneurs and leaders  

Theme 2:  Managing Business Activities
Students will develop an understanding of:  
- raising finance
- financial planning
- managing finance
- resource management
- external influences

Theme 3:  Business Decisions and Strategy
Students will develop an understanding of:  
- business objectives and strategy
- business growth
- decision‐making techniques
- influences on business decisions
- assessing competitiveness
- managing change

Theme 4:  Global Business
Students will develop an understanding of:  
- globalisation
- global markets and business expansion
- global marketing
- global industries and companies (multinational corporations)  

Entry requirements

You may not have studied any business subjects before, but that does not matter! What is much more important is that you want to know how to succeed in setting up and running a business and how running a business may be affected by the economy.   There is however significant numerical work and a grade B at GCSE Maths is highly recommended.  

Assessment

Paper 1:  Marketing, people and global business – 35% of the total qualification
Paper 1 will assess marketing, people and global businesses.  Questions will be drawn from Themes 1 and 4, and from local, national and global contexts.

Paper 2:  Business activities, decisions and strategy – 35% of the total qualification
Paper 2 will assess business finance and operations, business decisions and strategy. Questions will be drawn from Themes 2 and 3, and from local, national and global contexts.

Paper 3:  Investigating business in a competitive environment – 30% of the total qualification
Paper 3 will assess content across all four themes. Questions will be drawn from local, national and global contexts.  There will be a pre‐released document that will focus on a broad context, such as an industry or market in which businesses operated.   

Throughout the course you will develop a clear and concise style of writing enabling you to communicate effectively in a business setting. You will also learn how to analyse and interpret economic indicators, to work out how they may affect a business and what action should be taken to benefit from these, or minimise the damage.

Future opportunities

Business Studies is a popular ‘A’ Level and useful for taking a very wide range of university degree courses, including most subjects in the Humanities. In the field of business and allied areas, degree courses include: Business Management, Business Administration, Accountancy, Advertising, International Business, Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Law.   

It can also lead to a career in the commercial world e.g. banking, sales, accountancy and management.
