BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production at Bournville College

Course description

The Creative Media Production Extended Diploma is a fun but challenging course, ideal if you are seeking a career in media or progression into higher education. The course allows you to explore a wide range of media subjects and to gain theoretical and practical knowledge of the concepts and processes involved in making media products. You'll experience working in radio production, photography, television and video production. You'll also learn and develop a broad range of media skills and understanding of the production processes involved in the media products you will create. Media concepts, audience research and industry investigation support the practical areas of the course, which will allow you to make realistic media products such as radio adverts, music documentary’s & radio drama, short film productions and TV adverts and music videos.

Students will experience working in television and video production, audio production, photography. Students will learn and develop a broad range of media skills and understanding of the production processes involved in the various media.

The course will be structured around assignments which will allow students to make realistic media and the  assignments will be of increasing complexity over the two years and will draw upon skills and knowledge and will allow development of an individual student' talents and abilities.

The Creative Media Production BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment in media industries or for progression onto our Foundation Degree in Film & TV production technology.

Course content

The programme consists of the following units:

Core units
Understanding the media industries
Research Techniques
Production Management
Pre-Production Techniques
Working to a brief
Critical approach to media products

Specialist units including
Video editing techniques
Writing for television and video
Factual programme production techniques
Shooting – single camera drama
Corporate and promotional video production

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, one of which must be English Language
BTEC Level 2 Diploma (Merit or Distinction) together with a grade C in English Language
All applicants must have a good reference

Assessment

All of the units are assessed through coursework including video production work, written assignments and practical assessment.  The Functional Skills are assessed by a combination of external tests and a portfolio of evidence.

Future opportunities

Students who successfully complete this programme will be able to apply for our Foundation Degree in Film and Television Production Technology, offered in partnership with Staffordshire University.  Alternatively, you can apply to other universities offering diplomas and degree courses in media and other related areas or employment.
