Course description

Why should I study Music BTEC?

The BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Music will build and develop the necessary practical skills and understanding to begin a successful professional career in music or move on to further study.

The course is aimed at students who love music. You will develop your skills in performance and composition. You can perform and compose music in any style. You will also study elements of music theory that support the different musical areas of the course.

Where possible, we choose additional units that support the skills and interests of those on the course. Some examples of units are: composing and arranging music, solo music performance, working and developing as a musical ensemble, pop music in practice, music in the community and aural skills.

Course content

What skills will I need to be successful on this course?

Students who are successful on this course are confident performers, in any style, and using any instrument. It is beneficial to have taken GCSE music, but students with the right experience and skills will be considered without it. You do not need to have graded exams, but you must be able to perform to a high standard. You need to have an interest in music and the music industry and must want to improve as a practical musician. You will need to be a team player, and have the ability to work independently. It is essential that you meet deadlines.

Entry requirements

What qualifications do I need to start?

Students wishing to study Music Performance will need to satisfy the entry requirements to Arthur Mellows Sixth Form. If students have studied Music Performance at Level 2, they must have achieved at least a Pass or C grade. Enthusiasm for the subject and a good work ethic are also vital for success.

Assessment

How will I be assessed?

The course is made up of 6 units spread over the two-year course. Each unit is based on a series of assignments, which are assessed internally.

Where can it lead?

The BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Music will allow you to progress further into Higher Education to study music or the performing arts, or the poitns can be used towards any university application.
