Art & Design (Graphic Design) BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma at Grantham College

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma/Diploma in Production Arts is a nationally recognised qualification that is equivalent to three A Levels and therefore provides a natural stepping stone to courses in Higher Education and employment.

Course content

The BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Graphic Design is a nationally recognised qualification that is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels and this can be built on to eventually provide a stepping stone to the Extended Diploma in Digital Design and Graphics or courses in higher education. It is recommended for those who want to study a course in one year.

The course focuses on problem solving and the development of a personal visual language suitable for the design industry. You will prepare a portfolio of design work and on completion be equipped to evaluate and present your own work. The course covers a variety of design related subjects and may include: Exploring graphic design areas Mixed media image making Professional practice & presentation skills Specialist computer applications Typography

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs (Grade C or above), it is recommended that one is GCSE English Language, or a relevant Level 2 Diploma with at least a Merit profile or an appropriate equivalent. A portfolio of Art & Design work and satisfactory references are also required.

Financial information

If you are studying on a BTEC program at college you will also be required to attend GCSE/Functional Skills sessions if you do not already have a minimum of a grade C in both English Language and Mathematics; you will also attend a 1 hour Tutorial session per week. This will give you opportunities to develop and enhance your personal, communication and academic skills, which can then be applied to a wide range of subjects and to areas of employment. In order to be able to study on this course you will need to buy a range of art equipment, sketchbooks and a portfolio to keep your work in. 

There is an Art shop within the Arts Centre that stocks the materials and equipment listed above at competitive prices. We can provide the Graphics Kit Box at an additional cost which includes the essential range of equipment for you to start your course. You will also need an A4 folder with dividers in which you must keep all of your paperwork, handouts, notes, research, evaluations, feedback and assessments. 

 In addition to these a 35mm film camera and/or digital camera to record your work will be an advantage. Educational Visits During the course you will be required to attend a number of day visits to museums, Exhibitions, other colleges, Universities and, on occasions, residential visits. There will be a cost involved in these visits with the average being around £20 per visit.

Future opportunities

This course will enable you to prepare a portfolio of art and design work and equip you with the necessary skills to operate at a junior designer level or progress to further study on a Higher National Diploma, Foundation degree or eventually a BA degree course in Graphic Design or a design related discipline.
