Languages (FCSE Level 1) at New College Swindon
These introductory courses are available in each of the five languages above. They are suitable for you if you’d like to pick up a language again or want take up a new one, especially if you don’t have a qualification in a language at GCSE.
There are four themes:
- My world - relationships, family and friends; education and future plans
- Holidays and leisure - holidays and travel; leisure activities
- Lifestyle - healthy lifestyle; food and drink
- My community - local area and environment; celebrations
Lessons will be active: you will practise the vocabulary and expressions for each topic by listening, reading, speaking and writing. You will have access to a wide range of up to date materials.
You do not need any previous knowledge of the language to start this course, although if you have learnt some already, this is clearly an advantage. Some personal experience of other languages also comes in very useful.
During the course, you will complete a number of short, straightforward assignments, in lesson time, based on the work you have covered. At the end of the course, you will submit a portfolio of 10 assignments in total: three each of listening, reading, and writing, plus one recorded speaking task.
The FCSE qualification is available at three levels: Pass, Merit and Distinction. A Distinction is equivalent to a GCSE grade D.
The FCSE is a useful qualification in its own right: you will be able to communicate in speech and in writing, and understand what you hear and read. It is also a good preparation for a GCSE course, which can lead to A level.
The ability to speak and understand other languages is a valuable skill and may enhance your career opportunities in many areas of employment.
A language links well with any AS/A Levels, vocational courses or GCSEs.
