Sociology AS level at Clapton Girls' Academy

Course description

Sociology is the study of societies, people and their behaviour. Sociologists are interested in the way in which institutions such as the family, education and religion shape who we are and how we behave. How much of who you are is shaped by the society in which you live? The sociology course examines contemporary society where students will study many aspects of life in modern Britain.

Students will be encouraged to be interested, independent, active learners; expected to produce logical written and verbal arguments; required to participate in discussions as a class and in groups; expected to keep up-to-date with current issues; able to reflect on their own experience and the social world in which they live.

Course content

The AS will require students to look at the sociology of education and families and households.

Entry requirements

Minimum grade C in GCSE English.

Future opportunities

Students with AS/A-level sociology often go on to do degrees in subjects such as psychology, history and law. A qualification in sociology is useful for a wide range of careers.
