A Level Art Textiles - Option D at Arthur Mellows Village College
Why should I study Art Textiles?
If you have an interest in making a visual statement about your surroundings and enjoy learning about how artists and textile designers have responded to their environment then Art Textiles is an excellent subject to study.
The Art Textiles course at Arthur Mellows is exciting and challenging, drawing upon a range of skills including research, investigation and critical thinking. The lively, individual nature of the practical lessons is an ideal complement to many others subjects.
What will I do during the course?
During the course you will work on project based coursework where you will be taught how to create art using various textile processes. This will include techniques such as drawing, photography, embroidery, applique, screen printing, using heat to alter fabrics and also felting. Students are expected to work independently and be prepared to take risks.
The course is marked on students’ ability to experiment, carry out contextual research and produce a final piece. To help you understand how other artists work you will visit London galleries to carry out detailed research.
A wide range of teaching and learning styles are used including practicals, discussion work, self evaluation, theory and research.
Students wishing to study Art Textiles should ideally have studied Art at GCSE and gained a Grade B or above and a portfolio of previous work. An additional pass at Grade C in English would also be preferable.
How will I be assessed?
You are assessed at the end of each year. This is split into coursework and an examination. A 10 hour examination takes place in Year 12 and a 15 hour examination takes place in Year 13. Your work is initially marked and internally assessed and then assessed by a visiting moderator.
Where can it lead?
Most students who decide to continue go on to do a one year foundation course. Once this is completed there are numerous degree courses available including Decorative Arts, Fine Arts, Textiles and Fashion. Art Textiles is also an important subject if you wish to study Interiors.
The A Level course is recognised by most universities as an academic subject which may be used to gain access to Art and/or Textile specific degrees and/or used to supplement other A Level subjects in application for non-Art degrees.
Jobs that are suitable for students with an artistic background are fashion designers, photographers, museum work, restoration, interior designers and teaching.
