Building Services Engineering Level 1 Certificate at South Tyneside College

Course description

This qualification is aimed at you if you, if you are looking to start a career in the building services industry.

This qualification is suitable for anyone from 16 years old or over.

The qualification covers a very wide range of skills and knowledge required for preparing to work in building services industry.

It will give learners a taste of the four areas of building services, which are electrical, plumbing, refrigeration and air - conditioning and heating and ventilating.

Course content

In order to complete the qualification the following topics are all compulsory

  • understand how to apply scientific principles

  • understand how to apply environmental protection measures within BSE

  • understand and carry out safe working practices in building services engineering

  • understand and demonstrate fundamental plumbing operations

  • understand and demonstrate fundamental heating & ventilating operations

  • understand and demonstrate fundamental refrigeration & air conditioning

  • understand and demonstrate fundamental electrical installation operations

  • understand the roles, responsibilities and procedures within building services engineering

This practically based training is ideal preparation for training on the job or specialist further study

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for anyone wishing to take this qualification.


The course will be assessed through direct observation of practical work, and online assessment for the theory.

On successful completion this qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge that, with additional learning, will start you on the road to employment in the four areas of specialist building services.
