Latin at Spalding High School

Course description

INTRODUCTION

This course is designed for those wishing to pursue a more in depth approach to both the Latin languages and read a wider variety of Latin literature.

SKILLS NEEDED

You will need the linguistic, analytical and communication skills necessary to read and translate texts; to interpret and comment upon them within their literary, historical and social background.

Course content

SUBJECT CONTENT OF AS

Authors studied for the language and literature will include Ovid and Cicero. Unseen translation and the consolidation of language skills will also be an integral part of the course.

TEACHING METHODS

Class study consists of discussion and research of the content, style, literary and historical significance of the literature; reading and translation of the texts, together with essays or student presentations on the literary themes. Study of the language involves translation of sentences and passages, together with practice of the grammar.

Entry requirements

To achieve at least 6 grades, A* to C, at GCSE, including English language and mathematics. 

Students are required to have a reference/report which clearly shows that they are suitable to undertake academic studies at A Level standard.

Assessment

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT

Modular examinations will be taken in the language and literature at the end of the AS course.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Latin can be combined with a variety of subjects at degree level. The study of Latin allows for a wide choice of careers in such areas as information technology, management, administration, the legal profession, accountancy, media, politics and many other types of employment; it gives a prospective employer proof of an applicant’s wide ability.
