A Level Music at Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School

Course description

A level Music extends and develops the skills acquired at GCSE. Students select to perform a programme of repertoire lasting 5-6 minutes at AS, and 12-15 minutes at A2. AS pupils compose a 3 minute film score or song. A2 offers the choice to compose further, or complete technical Study exercises in the style of a Bach Chorale or Baroque Counterpoint. At both AS and A2 pupils study prescribed extracts from the A level Anthology of Music, and develop listening and harmony skills.

AS Level (Year 12)

Unit 1 Performing Music AS 30% A2 15%

Unit 2 Composing AS 30% A2 15%

Unit 3 Developing Musical Understanding AS 40% A2 20%

Units 1 & 2 are coursework. Unit 3 is assessed through a written examination.

A2 Level (Year 13)

Unit 4 extended Performance A2 15%

Unit 5 Composition and technical Study A2 15%

Entry requirements

To succeed in this course, students need to have a genuine interest in music production and sound recording. Music grade B is advisable but not essential, and students without GCSE Music will be considered.
