Product Design A Level at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College

Course description

This qualification equipping students with design skills for the future, encourages creativity and innovation offering progression from GCSE and beyond to HE or various careers. The subject allows students to design,develop and make either graphically modelled outcomes such as architecture, product concepts or to produce everyday resistant material products such as furniture.2

Course content

The course involves discussion, independent study, practical work, process experience with CAS and CAM, problem solving, research activities , visits, presentations, interactive board work, virtual design and videos/DVDs and use of the Virtual Learning Environment.

Entry requirements

A*-C GCSE in science, (maths minimum grade 4) and technology or art subjects with an aptitude to model and handle software at this level.


This Level 3 Adavnced GCE in Design and Technology (product design) consists of one externally-examined paper and one non-examined assessment component.

Component 1: Principles of Design & Technology

Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes

50% of the qualification

Component 2: Independent Design and Make Project

Non-examined assessment

50% of the qualification
