Art: Fine Art A Level at Bexhill College

Course description

This course is designed to build on and extend core fine art skills acquired at GCSE, alongside developing your creativity, expression, imagination, critical and contextual understanding.


Course content

Fine Art covers a range of disciplines allowing you an opportunity to explore and experiment with a wide range of techniques and processes which are underpinned by sound drawing and painting skills. You will be encouraged to combine materials and media to produce work of an individual and creative nature in both 2 and 3 dimensions. 
Year 1 - The emphasis of the first year is underpinned by core fine art skills. This is extended through experimentation and exploration of a broad range of materials, techniques and processes. You will be required to engage with the works of artists and designers which encourages a written critical response and enables you to analyse the way you work to inform and develop your personal work into an extended exploratory portfolio.
Year 2 - The emphasis of this year will be on developing and extending existing creative skills and you will be encouraged to develop a more independent approach to the subject demonstrating continued critical understanding, supported by integrated written engagement with the works of artists and designers to inform and develop work which has a personal significance into a major in-depth, practical and theoretical investigation. 

Entry requirements

At Least 5 GCSEs Graded 9-4 Or A*-C Including English At Grade C/4 Or Above And An Art Based Subject, Preferably Fine Art Or Art And Design.


Component 1: Personal Investigation (60%)
Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (15 hours): (40%)

Financial information

You will be asked to provide basic materials such as pencils, paintbrushes and sketchbooks as well as a contribution toward the cost of specialist or large quantities of materials you may choose for your projects. Some trips such as visits to museums and galleries are compulsory.

Future opportunities

The course will prepare you for further study at Foundation Diploma, HND/Degree level. There is a wealth of diverse careers in the Creative Industries which include practical fine art and design making, to illustration, teaching, gallery administration, architecture, art direction, film, television, curating and restoration.
