Health & Social Care: Level 2 at Suffolk New College

Course description

All students who have not achieved a grade C or grade 4, or above in GCSE English or Maths or both will need to study an English or/and Maths qualification alongside their chosen main qualification. 

Course content

This study programme provides you with the skills, knowledge and understanding underpinning the health and social care sector. You will learn about a variety of topics including: values and rights of clients, meeting individual needs, infection control and healthy living. You will complete one work placement and take part in visits to a range of services in the local area, through which you will be able to put into practice what you have learnt on the study programme. Your placement is in a care setting to help you decide on your next steps, improving employability or assisting you to advance to the next level of study. You will also have the chance to learn from guest speakers and planned events to further improve your understanding of the care industry. Throughout the study programme you will be assessed in a variety of ways including: creating leaflets, presentations, interviews and assignment reports and two external examinations. You will also undertake English & Maths at the appropriate level to support your future progression.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or grade 3 or above, including English Language or level 1 qualification in a relevant subject and level 1 Functional Skills in English.

Students must have a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and provide evidence of registration with the Update Service

Tuition Costs

No tuition fees are payable for students aged 16 – 18 on 31 August 2017. For all students aged 19+ please visit our website Details regarding fee remission and Advanced Learning Loans can also be found at the above website.

Additional Costs

£23 for textbook and £14 polo shirt £44 for enhanced DBS check to be completed prior to enrolment with £13 fee to register for the update service which students pay direct to DBS by debit or credit card (based on 2016-17 costs and may be subject to change).  



Future opportunities

On successful completion of the programme last year 63% of students progressed onto Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care and 37% to full time employment. Normally students who successfully complete the study programme at merit level and gain Functional Skills in English and Maths at Level 2, are eligible to progress onto Level 3 study. This could include the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care or other Level 2 or Level 3 courses. Alternatively students may seek employment within the health and social care sector.nbsp;
