Latin/Greek A-Level *FEES PAYABLE* at St Mary's Senior School

Course description

Aims of the Course • To develop good translation skills from Latin/ Greek texts into idiomatic and fluent English and to encourage a sophisticated appreciation of language in general. • Through knowledge of Latin; to improve understanding of English itself and to explain linguistic structures which help in learning other languages. • To read literature in the original language from a variety of authors, epic and lyric poets, historians, tragic and comic playwrights, philosophers, politicians and lawyers. • To help pupils to analyse the works they read orally and on paper, by discussing the cultural context in which they were written and styles of expression. • Through reading, to give the pupils a broad knowledge of certain aspects of ancient society, its history, social life, politics, religions, drama and ideas. • To encourage the pupils to compare and contrast ancient societies with our own. • To appreciate the place of ancient literature and culture in the European tradition.

Entry requirements

It is expected that you will achieve an A Grade at GCSE in the subjects that you wish to continue to AS Level.

If you are joining us for Sixth Form from another school we require that you achieve at least six A Grades and above at GCSE Level.
