Health and Social Care Advanced Specialist Qualification at Thorpe St Andrew School and Sixth Form

Course description

The Advanced Specialist Qualification in Health and Social Care is a vocational qualification which is equal to three A Levels. The course focuses on the health and social care sector, looking at all life stages, services and current legislation. This will also include some practical experience. It may be possible to study an AS subject alongside this qualification in Year 13.

Why study the Advanced Specialist Qualification in Health and Social Care?
This qualification prepares students for direct employment into the vocational sector in a range of Health and Social Care professions or to progress to higher education. You will also benefit from gaining work experience in Health, Social Care and Early Years settings. Previous students have secured university places in Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work and Teaching.

Course content

The course consists of a variety of units. Most of these units are internally assessed in the form of assignments. Students must also complete a minimum of 100 hours of work experience. These hours are divided between three different Health, Social Care and Early Years settings. You will also achieve a basic First Aid certificate and Food Hygiene certificate.

Students will be awarded a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* by the points gained for the successful achievement of individual units. These are then calculated into UCAS points as detailed in the information booklet.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade C or above are required including English and Mathematics. Students must show an interest in working in a Health and Social Care environment.

Future opportunities

Students can enter into employment in a range of Health and Social Care professions. Some direct entry employment is combined with further professional qualifications. Alternatively, students can enter into higher education, studying a range of Health and Social Care degree programmes including: Social Work, Health and Social Care, Childhood Studies, Nursing, Midwifery, Social Policy, Psychology, Sociology and many more. Specialist Qualifications are equivalent to A Levels and are recognised by universities.
