Sport (BTEC Level 2) at New College Swindon

Course description

This is a one-year course, which provides a good introduction if you want a career in sport or fitness.  You will learn through a practical as well as a classroom-based approach.

The Diploma is a Level 2 qualification, equivalent to 4 GCSE grades A* - C if fully completed and achieved.

Course content

The course includes these units of study, three of which are mandatory units (*):

  • Participating in Sport (*)
  • Sports Coaching (*)
  • Developing sporting skills and tactical awareness (*)
  • Sports volunteering
  • Physical fitness and injuries in sport
  • Planning and running a sports event
  • Lifestyle and the sports performer

It is also possible to trial for the New College Academies in Football, Basketball and Netball. Training sessions will then be embedded into the timetable where possible.

Entry requirements

You must have 4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including English, to start the Level 2 Diploma.

You must also take courses in English and Mathematics, if you haven’t achieved GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in these subjects.

A broad interest in the theoretical elements of sport and a good all round practical ability is essential for assessments.

Personal commitment and enthusiasm are essential for this course, as you will have to spend some time on a voluntary basis working with others in sport.

Assessment

All the units are assessed by different methods which will include leaflets, written documents, PowerPoint presentations, video analysis, tests and practical observation. These will be completed throughout the year.

Future opportunities

The course can provide a preparation for the Level 3 in Sport. In some cases it may

be possible to go on to the BTEC Level 3 National in Sport & Exercise Science, or to an AS/A Level programme.

If you are hoping to progress, you should be aiming to achieve Merit or Distinction grades in all units and have a high level of attendance.

It may also be possible for you to go into the area of the Leisure and Recreation industry, leading to a career with Local Authorities or private companies.
