Biology - GCE A Level at The Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form
This course offers a broad, modern, contextual and challenging approach to the study of A Level Biology. Students will be given the opportunity to develop their knowledge starting with the fundamental principles of biology. The topics covered will enable students to develop both depth and breadth of understanding of the biological world. Topics range from the fundamentals of genetics and inheritance, the human immune system, physiology, evolution and biochemistry, culminating in the study of how all this knowledge is currently being applied in modern scientific research. Students will also study genetic engineering, gene regulation and expression in the fields of oncology and epigenetics. An understanding of the scientific method is developed and built upon through practical lessons which are essential for anyone wishing to go on a study science at university.

General Entry Requirements:Minimum of 5 GCSEs 9-4 or A*-C including English Language and Mathematics
Subject Specific Entry Requirements: Grade 6 in Biology or 6,6 Combined Science, with Grade 6 or above in Mathematics and Grade 4 in English Language

This scheme was introduced by the Government to help students study. Contributions and payments ‘in kind’ have been made to students to help with their individual identified needs, such as:
• Stationery costs and packs
• Books and revision guides
• Educational trips/residential trips
• University Open Day visit costs
• Employment/apprenticeship opportunities
Bursaries are available to students in the following categories:
Students who are identified by the government at ‘most vulnerable’ will be eligible for a guaranteed bursary of £1,200.
Family income is below threshold for working tax credits/free school meals.
Students who have an extreme financial barrier, mitigating circumstances and/or a short-term specific educational or independent living cost.
Applications will be issued during Summer 2018 for students to return on Enrolment Day.

The study of biology at A Level is suitable for anyone wishing to pursue a career in any biological or health-related field. Previous students have gone on to study and establish careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy, nursing, teaching, biomedical science, forensic science and sports science.
If you have an enthusiasm for biology, then this is the course for you. To be successful on this course you need to be an effective communicator, efficient team member and have an aptitude for scientific analysis. If you are motivated to push your knowledge of biology and have a determined attitude towards independent study then you will succeed.
