Body and Paint IMI Level 1 Diploma at Bridgwater College

Course description

This course will interest you if you are 16-19 and have an interest in working as a paint sprayer or vehicle body repairer. It will introduce the skills and knowledge necessary to work within the motor industry.

Course content

You will learn how to repair body panels and to paint them using the latest techniques which will include:
• Health and safety for the vehicle technician. 
• Vehicle panel repair (Hammer and dolly techniques, filling, sanding).
• Vehicle panel preparation (sanding, cleaning and masking). 
• Vehicle refinishing techniques (priming sanding and colour coats). 
You will work in our live workshops, repairing and painting real vehicles and sample work. Study will be over three days each week, leaving the other two days free for work experience or other studies.

Entry requirements

You will need a range of GCSEs in the D - G range or Basic Skills at Entry 3, a possitive attitude and the potential and stamina to complete the programme and progress. A keen interest in the automotive industry is essential.  You will undergo an interview and be part of an initial induction process.


Learners will be assessed through practical tasks, written phase tests and online assessment tests for each unit. 
On successful completion of the course, you will gain the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Vehicle Body Repair and Refinishing Technical Certificate Award at level 1.

Future opportunities

 Progress to a higher level course e.g. level 2/3 IMI Technical Certificate/ Diploma in Body & Paint or Light/Heavy Vehicle 
• Seek employment in the automotive trade
• Embark on an apprenticeship programme
