Creative Media BTEC Level 2 First Diploma at Hornsea School and Language College

Course description

This course aims to teach you everything about digital media production. It will give you an understanding of employment opportunities, job requirements and working practices in the digital media industry and an understanding of how digital media products are created for specific audiences or markets.

This course is delivered from the Edexcel specification for BTEC Firsts. It is aimed at Level 2 learners and is the equivalent of 1 GCSE. You will achieve a PASS, MERIT or DISTINCTION.

Course content

Year 12

The course is delivered over 1 year and includes 4 units:

  • Unit 1: Digital media sectors and their audiences
    This unit is an exam unit and will investigate the basic knowledge about digital media and its products. It will be assesses at the end of the academic year and will be 10% of the qualification with a 1 hour exam.
  • Unit 2: Planning & pitching a digital   media product to target employers
    A coursework unit where you will have to present your ideas to an employer.
  • Unit 3: Digital moving image production
    Coursework unit where you will have to create a promotional video for the product given to you.
  • Unit 5: Digital publishing production
    Coursework unit where you will have to create a leaflet or DVD cover for your promotional video of the product given to you.

Assessment

This course is assessed through  practical activities and written coursework depending on the subject matter PLUS a one hour exam on the basics of media. Coursework and practical assessments are based on realistic workplace situations and live assignments where appropriate.

  • 1 hour external examination, 25%
  • Coursework, 75%

 

Future opportunities

The course prepares you for  employment in roles such as a junior web developer, television production assistant, website designer, advertising agent, promoter of products.

    • Our transport provision is shared with HSLC’s home-school transport. The routes shown here arrive at Sixth Form for 8.30am and depart at 3.10pm. Bus passes can be purchased for Sixth Form students from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s website.

      Free twilight buses also run on these routes three days per week at 5.00pm. These give students the opportunity to take part in clubs, societies, catch-up sessions or to use the Sixth Form study facilities.
