Course description

Level Product Design seeks to develop students’ knowledge, understanding, skills and application for designing products. Product Design encompasses a wide range of design disciplines but is firmly rooted in the skills required to design and make high quality products. An emphasis on real world Design and Commercial practices in Year 13 lead to a client led product design project.

Course content

Year 12 - Materials & Components; Industrial & Commercial practice; Quality and Quality control; Health and Safety.

Year 13 – Systems and Control; Industrial Manufacturing systems and automation; Design in Context – Design History; Sustainability.

Edexcel Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Design and Technology: Product Design (8RM01)
60% Unit 1 Coursework Project Porfolio of Creative skills, Product Investigation; Product Design; Product manufacture
40% Unit 2 Written Exam, 1 ½ hours - Design & Technology in Practice

40% Unit 3 Written Exam 2 hours - Design for the future
60% Unit 4 Coursework - Commercial design

Product Design is a general design field that covers Graphics and Materials Technology, ideal careers include: Graphic Design, Print Industry, Architecture, Interior Design, Engineering, Industrial Design and Marketing. Design supports a range of career options due to the range of key skills used when designing; including written and oral presentations. Links to industry and universities are used to give students and insight into aspects of Design & Technology.
