Music at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi
The course provides opportunities for candidates to develop their aural perception skills and their appreciation of and participation in music, as well as encouraging them to make connections between different aspects of musical activities and to apply their knowledge and understanding to unfamiliar music.
Pupils will follow the WJEC exam board syllabus for A Level Music. The course comprises three units at AS Level: MU1, MU2 and MU3; and a further three units at A Level: MU4, MU5 and MU6.
MU1: Performing (30% of AS, 15% of A Level)
Candidates will be required to perform for 8-10 minutes of grade 5 standard or above as a member of an ensemble or as a soloist. One of the pieces performed must reflect one of the areas of study. This will be assessed through an external examination in April / May.
MU2: Composing (30% of AS, 15% of A Level)
Candidates will be required to create two contrasting compositions between 4 and 8 minutes in length. One composition must reflect the Western Classical Tradition. This unit is coursework and will be moderated externally in April.
MU3: Appraising (40% of AS, 20% of A Level)
Part 1: 1 hour appraising examination based on the set works.

Part 2: 1 hour aural perception examination (including melodic dictation, keys, chords and cadences) based on unprepared musical extracts.
MU4: Performing (15% of A Level)
Candidates will be required to perform for 10-12 minutes of grade 6 standard or above as a member of an ensemble or as a soloist. One of the pieces performed must reflect one of the areas of study. This will be assessed through an external examination in April / May.
MU5: Composing (15% of A Level)
Candidates will be required to create two contrasting compositions between 6 and 10 minutes in length. One composition must reflect the Western Classical Tradition and the other must reflect music in the 20th / 21st century. This unit is coursework and will be externally marked in April.
MU6: Appraising (15% of A Level)
One written examination in two parts. (2 ¼ hours)
Part 1: ¾ hour listening examination based on unfamiliar 20th / 21st century music.
Part 2: 1 ½ hour listening / written examination requiring candidates to analyse Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G and place the work within a broader musical perspective.
In addition to the above modules pupils must decide on one of the following options to make up for the final 10% of the course.
Option 1 – Performing for a further 6 – 8 minutes.
Option 2 – Composing 1 additional ‘free choice’ composition.
Option 3 – Sitting an additional written examination paper (45 minutes).
