Business Academic A-Level at Gateacre School

Course description

The GCE Academic A Level Business qualification is the equivalent of one A Level. Students can study this subject for one year and obtain an AS qualification or study for two years and obtain the full A Level qualification. For the AS qualification 2 units of work must be completed and for the full A Level qualification 4 units of work must be completed (usually 2 in year 12 and 2 in year 13).

Course content

The Academic A Level Business qualification is for students who prefer to sit exams rather than do coursework. It is for students who wish to follow careers or courses in one of the many areas of business. This qualification helps students to gain access to higher-level qualifications, such as the Higher National Diploma, a Degree or they can go straight into work. It can prepare them for a range of jobs in the public, private and voluntary sectors, such as: Accountancy, Financial Services, Sales and Marketing, Personnel Management, Retailing, Public Administration, Manufacturing and Production.

AS - Areas of Study

Students will complete 2 units:

  • Planning & Financing a Business
  • Managing a Business
A2 – Areas of Study

Students will complete 2 further units:

  • Strategies for success
  • The Business Environment & Managing Change

The programme also develops key skills in the following areas: communication, application of number, ICT, working with others, improving own learning and performance, problem solving.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above which should normally include Mathematics and English. In exceptional circumstances, candidates with slightly lower qualifications may be admitted to the course after interview.

If students drop this course at the end of Year 12 they will receive an AS qualification for completing 2 units.

It is not necessary to have studied Business at GCSE level to do this course although it is an advantage as most students have already completed the GCSE Business Qualification.


The programme is assessed by 4 external written tests over the two year programme. Two in year 12 to obtain the AS qualification, and 2 in year 13 to obtain the full A Level. There is no coursework involved in this course.
