Hair Professional Apprenticeship in Hairdressing at Philips Hair Salons (Academy)

Course description

An Apprenticeship in Hairdressing that will provide you with the skills to become a professional hairdresser. The programme comprises of one full day theory and practical training at Philips Hair Academy and the rest of the week employed as an apprentice in a salon, with additional training (we will help suitable candidates to find a suitable work placement).

Course content

The course includes the Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals qualification; Maths and English Functional skills at level 1 and to have SAT level 2 if not exempt, the Hair Professional standards and End-Point-Assessment.

To achieve the Diploma for Hair Professionals qualification candidates are required to complete 5 mandatory units and 1 optional unit.

Mandatory Units:

  • 201 – Consultation
  • 202 – Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • 203 – Cut Hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • 204 – Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • 205 – Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques

Optional Units:

  • 206 - Perming hair
  • 207 - Hair relaxing treatments and techniques
  • 208 - Hair extension services

Entry requirements

There are no minimum academic requirements, although candidates are required to have a basic English and Maths level; GCSE grade 3 and above is recommended, but not essential. Applicants should have good communication skills, show enthusiasm and commitment, be well presented and polite.

Assessment

 Assessment is on-going throughout the programme by means of online assessments, practical observations of work and question and answers. The apprenticeship is completed by an End-Point-Assessment carried out by an external assessor from City and Guilds and can be graded Fail, Pass or Merit.

Financial information

The course is either part or fully funded by The European Skills Funding Agency. For candidates between the age of 16-18 years, the programme is fully funded; for candidates over the age of 19 years the course is part funded, which means the employer (NOT the candidate) must contribute the remaining funds for the course. A hairdressing kit is required for all candidates to start the programme. It is recommended that the employer provides equipment to work with, though it is beneficial and recommended that candidates have their own equipment costing £210 in total, which covers everything needed to complete the programme.

Future opportunities

On Completion of the Hair Professionals Apprenticeship, candidates could progress onto the Senior Hair Professional Apprenticeship programme, which helps candidates to gain all the knowledge and skills required by employers to be a competent and successful hair stylist.

Further opportunities on successful completion of said courses can lead to many exciting opportunities within the hairdressing industry, including fashion work, working abroad, owning your own business, working on cruise liners, working in the media or theatre, taking part in competitions and shows or even further study towards assessing and teaching.
