Financial Studies Diploma (Level 3) at The Abbey School

Course description

CeFS has been designed to cover the core disciplines of financial capability. Learners are encouraged to become responsible borrowers, sensible savers, and have an appreciation of the need for financial planning throughout their life. Its purpose is to prepare students for further study through the development of the core skills of critical analysis and evaluation, synthesis, verbal communication (through classroom discussion) and written communication.

Course content


Certificate (Year 1)

Unit 1: Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short term

Unit 2: Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term

Diploma (Year 2)

Unit 3: Sustainability of an Individual's Finances

Unit 4: Sustainability of the Financial Services System

Entry requirements

5 A*-C GCSEs or equivalent to include:

  • A minimum of Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and GCSE maths


The course is assessed entirely through external exams.  Each unit has two papers: a multiple choice online test (35%) and a case study based written paper (65%).  Exams take place in January and May each year.

Future opportunities

Students completing this Diploma can progress to university or college or can use their qualifications to obtain an apprenticeship in the financial services.
