AS Level Geography at The Rugeley Sixth Form Academy
At AS level students will study from the following topics: weather, coasts, unequal places, rebranding places, global hazards, climate change, globalisation and population migration. At A2 level students will study from the following: tectonics, cold environments, life at the margins, cultural diversity, pollution and health, consuming rural areas – leisure and tourism, energy security, water conflicts, biodiversity under threat, superpower geographies, bridging the development gap and technological fix Geography is a popular and successful subject. It bridges the 'arts' and 'science' subjects and provides flexibility when making choices about higher education courses and subsequent careers. Geography is well respected by employers and universities. How the course is assessed: Year 12 AS level: there are two exam papers at AS, one unit will be examined in January and the other in May. The exams include short answer, data response and essay style questions Year 13 A2 level there are two exam papers at A2, one unit will be examined in January and the other in May or June. The exams include data response and essay style questions, some of which are based on pre-released resources. Geography also delivers all of the key skills. What students do after successful completion: A Geography qualification has relevance to careers in management, surveying, planning, housing, meteorology, geology, graphics, IT, teaching, research, marketing, transport, architecture, journalism, engineering, design, sports management, finance, environmental and tourism based jobs.
Students should fulfil the general entry requirements to study A levels at the Academy and preferable have achieved a Grade B or above at GCSE Geography.
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE, which could lead onto higher education to study geography, other areas of humanities, science or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to geography such as a Town Planner, Environmental Officer or Weather Forecaster. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for. You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as Travel and Tourism or Health and Social Care, to prepare for higher education in areas of geography, humanities, science or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go on to a job related to geography and work as a Town Planner, Environmental Officer or Weather Forecaster. The course also helps you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
