Physics A level **FEES PAYABLE** at Acorn Independent College

Course description

Physics is an opportunity to study and appreciate the forces that dictate the formation and behaviour of the world, and indeed the universe around us. It is often said that all science is physics and certainly understanding the fundamentals of physics such as forces, the laws of motion, fields, and mechanics is crucial to a full understanding of all branches of science. Physics is also a stimulating real-life subject and students will develop an understanding of topical issues such as the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN laboratory and the fundamentals of space travel.

Good physics students will also be good mathematicians and so the two subjects complement each other well at A Level.

Entry requirements

Although details of previous school reports and examination results may be considered, previous academic achievements are not our only criteria. At Acorn House, we value eagerness to learn and willingness to work hard. After discussing possible courses, an offer of a place is made if the student’s aims appear to be compatible with those of the College.

Future opportunities

Physics is essential for the study of Engineering degrees and also certain medical sciences such as Audiology and Optometry.

Further information

Acorn House offers a variety of ways to study A Levels, so that we can help each student to achieve their best in response to their individual needs.

The Two-year programme  is designed for students who have completed their GCSE courses. Most students will study four AS subjects in their first year, and three of these subjects at A2 in the second year.

The One-Year Fast-Track A Level programme runs from September to June and offers an intensive approach to the student’s chosen subject. This one-year focused approach can be useful for those who have studied AS Levels or A Levels elsewhere but may not have achieved their desired grade and wish to retake their exams.

Our 18 Month A Level course option begins in January. It is particularly suited to students who are wishing to retake the full 2-year A Level course, but who were unable to begin in September, or who wish to move schools following a term in Lower Sixth elsewhere. The first year’s worth of modules for the A Level course will be condensed into the Spring and Summer terms in Lower Sixth, ending in June. Students will then be able to complete their final year of A Level study in the ordinary calendar structure, from September to June.
