Course content

The main subject areas of Physical, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry are studied through a range of units.  Topics studied include the nature of matter, atomic and molecular structure chemical bonding, the chemical industry, plastics and polymers and environmental pollution.  Chemistry is helpful in many careers and essential for any career related to medicine.  A Level Chemistry in highly regarded by Higher Education institutions and many different types of employers.

Students may choose either the one year or two year course.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade B or above including English and Maths.  You will also need a grade A in Science subjects although a Grade B may be accepted in exceptional circumstances.

Assessment

Paper 1 is a combination of physical and inorganic chemistry with the relevant practical knowledge also assessed.

Paper 2 is a combination of physical and organic chemistry with the relevant practical knowledge also assessed.

Paper 3 can assess any content covered during the 2 years including all practical knowledge.

    • Applications are now being taken for places at the Medical Professions Academy for Sixth Formers at Harborne Academy which opened in September 2014.

      The Academy for Careers in the Medical Professions offers a range of Science based courses including AS/A Levels and vocational courses for Sixth Formers to support their aspirations for careers in the medical professions.

      Whether your aspirations are to be a Doctor or a Scientist in cancer research, the Academy has a range of qualifications that will meet the entry requirements of either University or apprenticeship employment.

      It is very competitive to get into Medical School, and students applying will be required to achieve high grades in their A Level study (or equivalent qualifications).

      We look forward to welcoming you into the Sixth Form to commence your studies and hope that you maximise the opportunities available - you will have to work hard but the rewards will be enormous.
