BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma, Diploma & Extended Diploma in Performing Arts at Rutlish School

Course description

This course will give you insight into the varied employment opportunities in the performing arts industry. The course can be adapted to your interests, abilities and aspirations. The course is ideally suited to students who work well in a practical setting. There are compulsory units plus your choice of specialist units such as devising, contemporary dance, theatre in education and applying physical theatre. Students will benefit from the excellent theatre spaces we have at RR6 and the prosperous partnerships with external drama and theatre organizations, which include The Royal School of Speech and Drama, The National Theatre and Kings College Drama. These partnerships allow students to experience professional workshops, work with industry professionals and perform in professional theatre spaces.

Course content

For the Subsidiary Diploma, which is equivalent to 1 A level, you will study one core unit (performing for an audience) and five options. These options can be chosen for a huge range and include script writing, applying physical theatre, performing with masks and TV acting.

For the Diploma, which is equivalent to 2 A Levels, you will study three core units (performing for an audience, performance workshop and performing arts business) and eight options. These optional units will be tailored to your individual strengths and interests and could include devising plays, theatre in education and auditions for actors.

For the Extended Diploma you will study five core units which include performing arts business, historical context of performance and rehearsing for performance. You will then study a further twelve units which will be chosen to highlight and improve your skills in performing arts. Some examples of these units could include theatre for children, musical theatre performance, urban dance and applying acting styles

Entry requirements

GCSE in Drama/Dance at C or Merit profile at BTEC Level 2. You should also have practical experience of live performance. Applicants for this course will be required to attend a practical audition as part of the interview process. Students will need to prepare two short monologues, one modern piece and the other Shakespearean and should speak to their drama teachers for advice. The Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to one A level. The Diploma is equivalent to two A’ Levels. The Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A’ levels.


All completed units are internally assessed at RR6 and graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. A variety of methods are used including case studies, projects, contribution to the rehearsal process and performances.

Future opportunities

There is a wide variety of careers that can be explored including acting, musical theatre performance, teaching, stage management or directing. The Subsidiary, Diploma and Extended Diploma are ideal pathways to further study at university at Degree and HND level.
