Business BTEC Diploma Level 2 at Valentines High School
BTEC Firsts in Business have been designed to develop knowledge and understanding in the business sector. Students will be taught a range of important business topics that will give them a taster of what they might come across on a higher level course or in employment.
This is a one year course consisting of 11 business units. Students will be taught by three teachers over the year, two teachers will teach 4 units and 1 teacher will teach 3 units. The units that will be covered are outlined below.
Students have to study 6 compulsory units. The first unit is “Principles of Marketing”in which they will examine a range of approaches to marketing to better understand today’s modern customer. The second unit is“Finance for Business” where students will learn about costs, revenues, profit, break even, cash flow and how to record financial transactions. The third unit is“Small Business Planning” which looks at factors that will impact on the start-up of a business. The fourth unit is“Introducing Project Management” which explores the importance of good project management to businesses. The fifth unit is“Enterprise in the Business World” where students plan an idea for a new business and look at how trends and the current business environment may impact on a business. The sixth unit is“Promoting a Brand” which explores the importance of branding and promotion for a business.
Students then have to complete 5 optional units which are “Recruitment, Selection and Employment”, “Delivering and Improving Customer Service”, “Planning, Forecasting and Recording Business Finances”, “Sales and Personal Selling” and “Effective Business Communication”.
5 GCSEs of D grade or better.
Two units are external assessed via an examination – “Finance of Business” and “Principles of Marketing”. The rest of the units are internally assessed, meaning that the teachers will set the assignments, mark them and send off a sample for the external verifier to check. For each unit students can be awarded a fail, pass, merit or distinction. It is therefore possible for the students to get the same grades for the overall award. To get a merit, students will have to have achieved a merit or distinction in each of the 11 units and to get a distinction they should have been awarded a distinction in all units. The BTEC First Diploma is the equivalent of four GCSE grades A*-C.
In the past many of our students who have done a similar course have gone on to do the next level course which would be either the BTEC National Certificate or AS and A Levels. In order to progress on to the next level students must achieve at least a Merit. Many have then gone on to study university courses in accountancy, banking, business /retail management, personnel/ HR and marketing.
