Drama & Theatre Studies A-Level at Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich

Course description

Year 12 Content

The AS course has two Units:

Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and Theatre

In Unit 1 you will study two plays through a series of practical workshops.  These practical workshops will give you the opportunity to develop your understanding of the characters, themes and social, cultural, historical and political context.  You will write up your exploration in a 3000 word Exploration Notes document.

As a class we will go to the theatre to see a live performance.  You will analyse this performance and write a 1000 word essay on the production.

Unit 2: Text in Performance

In Unit 2, you will perform a role in a monologue or duologue and a group production of a play.  You will take part in workshops that will help you to develop your performance skills.  Your final performance will be to a visiting examiner from Edexcel who will give you an overall grade for this unit.

Year 13 Content

The A2 course has two additional Units.

Unit 3: Devising

In Unit 3 you will work in group to devise your own piece of drama for presentation.  This will be based on a stimulus set by your teacher.  To support your devising and evaluation process, you will submit a 3500 word Supporting Written Evidence Document which sums up the journey you have taken through developing, performing and reflecting on you play.

Unit 4: Text in Context

In the final Unit, you will study two further plays.  The first play will be from the point of view of a director and is a text set by the exam board.  The second play will be by Shakespeare and must include seeing a contemporary production.  You will then sit a 2 hours 30 minutes written exam which requires you to sum up your modern interpretation of the play prescribed by the exam board and compare the production of the Shakespeare play you saw to an original production of the same play.
