Sports Studies BTEC Level 3 Diploma at North Liverpool Academy

Course description

The course will provide you with the coaching, administrative, fitness and sporting knowledge required to be successful within this part of the industry. This is the National Diploma in Sport, Sport Development and Coaching & Fitness pathways. These qualifications are vocationally based with a combination of practical activities underpinned with theoretical study, giving you a good mix of learning environments and real life learning experiences.

This course reflects the growth in higher education and job opportunities now emerging in sports development, coaching and fitness industries. This will continue to increase due to government programmes putting £2bn into sports development at grass roots level, the successful London Olympic bid, the emerging health agenda across the nation and the continued development of the fitness industry.

 

Course content

The BTEC level 3 Diploma in sport is taught over 2 years and consists of 13 units.

In year 1 you will study:

  • Unit 1 Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in sport
  • Unit 2 The Physiology of Fitness
  • Unit 3 Assessing Risk in Sport
  • Unit 5 Sports Coaching
  • Unit 7 Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
  • Unit 8 Practical Team Sports
  • Unit 11 Sports Nutrition

In year 2 you will study:

  • Unit 4 Fitness Training and Programming
  • Unit 6 Sports Development
  • Unit 7 Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
  • Unit 9 Practical Individual Sports
  • Unit 15 Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise
  • Unit 22 Rules Regulations and Officiating in Sport
  • Unit 23 Organising Sports Events

 

Entry requirements

Grade C or above in English GCSE Level 2 BTEC pass or GCSE PE c or above.

Assessment

You will be assessed in the following ways:

  • Practical demonstration of skills (DVD).
  • Officiating sports matches.
  • Written reports.
  • Training programmes.
  • Essays.
  • Presentation.

 

Future opportunities

Progression to university to study a sports related degree and/or a career in the sport or fitness industry.
