Plastering Level 1 Diploma at Darlington College
If your interests lie in becoming a plasterer and the associated trades, this course will provide you with the foundation required to commence your career. This is a practically based course which will allow you to learn and develop the various skills relating to the trade.
If you have not achieved a C grade or above in English or maths, you will as part of your course be required to work towards this as part of your study programme. You will be given the opportunity to go on work experience at certain times during your course.
To develop your employability opportunities you may also be given enrichment classes. This may focus upon additional qualifications, industrial updating and career preparation.
This is a practical based course, where you will learn through underpinning theory sessions. Practical assignments are carried out in the college site area where you will learn key principles. This course is supported by individual and group tutorial sessions.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Health and safety are of paramount importance in the construction industry and we place a great emphasis on this part of your education. If you enrol on, and undertake any course in the construction department you will be required to provide and wear at all times (in the college site area and whilst surveying) mandatory PPE as follows:
1) Approved protective footwear with ankle support (Rigger type boots are not allowed)
2) Approved safety glasses
3) Approved hi-visibility vest
4) Approved gloves
It is also expected that you will attend college in suitable work wear / clothes; it will be possible to order this directly with suppliers during college enrolment.
Theory and practical elements include:
- How to carry out safe working practices in construction
- Knowledge of information, quantities and communicating with others
- Knowledge of building methods and construction technology
- How to prepare background surfaces and plaster materials
- How to apply plaster materials to internal backgrounds
- How to produce components from moulds
- Prepare for fix and set plasterboard and cast from moulds
No formal qualifications are required, but a keen interest in the area is essential.
You will be required to attend an interview at the college for all courses and Apprenticeships and we will request a school or college report.
Assessment is via coursework, practical, written and oral examination. Assessment will be through external testing.
Successful completion of this course can take you to a Level 2 course in Plastering or go on to an Apprenticeship.
