Applied Business Studies, AQA at Penistone Grammar Advanced Learning Centre

Course description

In Business Studies you will explore solutions to business problems which help firms succeed. You will understand different types of organisations, how they operate and how they make a profit and gain a real understanding of how the business world 
By showing a future employer that you know and appreciate how their operations work is one step towards a successful career in ANY organisation you choose to work for.
This is a dynamic and fast paced course completely brought up to date this year and relevant to the current and future business climate.

Course content

AS Level
What do we learn? 
 A Background to Business 
 Managers and Leaders 
 Decision making in Marketing, Production, Human Resources and Finance
Assessment is by two 1½ hour written exams at the end of year one. Each exam counts as 50% towards the AS qualification.
A Level 
You will be tested on the work covered in the AS qualification as well as the work you cover in your second year. 
 The Strategic position of a business 
 Choosing a Strategic Direction to take and how to execute the strategy 
 How to manage strategic change
Assessment is by three 2 hour written exams at the end of the course. Each exam counts 33.3% towards the A-level grad

Entry requirements

To secure a place at our Post 16 Centre five passes or more GCSE passes at grade C or above and a minimum of a C grade in both English Language and Mathematics.  All students will also need a B Grade GCSE in any subject they are wanting to study at A Level.  If it is a new subject for example Sociology or Psychology students must have achieved a grade B in both Mathematics and English Language. 

It would be helpful if you have studied Business at GCSE.


Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Accounting or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Business Studies, which could lead onto higher education in areas of business studies, marketing, accounting or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to business studies, marketing, finance and accounting, human resources and public relations. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that would support a trainee management course within a company and help you develop the skills, understanding and experience to work towards management level.
