History - AS/A2 Level at Thornleigh Salesian College

Course description

In history over the two years, you will study the following:

Life in Nazi Germany- This will include topics such as: How did the Nazis use propaganda? How did the Nazis control Germany? What impact did WW2 have on Germany?

Louis XIV and absolutism in France- Who was Louis XIV? Why did Louis give himself the nickname 'The Sun King'?

Britain 1918-1964 This will include topics such as: What impact did the First and Second World Wars have on Britain? Why did Churchill lose the 1945 election?

Coursework- The causes of the First World War- This will include topics such asd: Why did Europe get into alliances? To what extent was Germany to blame for the War?

Entry requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English and Maths as well as C grades in the subjects that you want to study. Many courses do accept students who have not previously studied the subject. To study AS Level Science subjects you will require a minimum combination of GCSE B/B in Core and Additional Science. To study AS Level Maths you will require a minimum of a B grade in Maths GCSE

 

It is recommended that students have taken GCSE History and have obtained Grade A*-C. However, it is possible to begin A-level History without the GCSE provided the students' other GCSE grades (especially English) are predominantly A-C.

Assessment

Following A Level reforms in this subject, from 2015, all exams will need to be taken at the end of the course. AS grades do not contribute to the A Level grade.

Future opportunities

History is a respected A Level by Higher Education groups which is likely to provide you with lots of opportunities in the future.  With further training, you could go into a job related to history by seeking employment in areas of heritage such as working for a museum or within education such as a teacher.
