Course description

The hairdressing and barbering industry continues to thrive. Hairdressing and barbering is the 5th most popular independent start-up business, with the average woman spending £600 per annum on their hair. The barbering industry has been growing and developing in recent years, this trend is predicted to continue and lead to an even more developed market.

This Foundation Certificate is specifically aimed at future stylists/barbers and will provide them with the skills and qualities to progress to higher level learning and achieve a successful career within this dynamic industry.

This qualification also enables learners to study English and maths alongside their mainstream qualification and improve their literacy and numeracy skills and grades. The emphasis on developing valuable employability skills alongside literacy and numeracy will build confidence, communication, teamwork and independence; the skills every employer wants!

Course content

This qualification will cover a variety of units that will enable you to develop a wide range of technical skills and develop vital employability skills.

You will follow an individual learning programme that will incorporate literacy, numeracy and employability skills. You will also have the opportunity to work in our commercial salon- Urban Elegance alongside professional and highly skilled stylists/barbers.

English and maths

In order for you to compete in today’s labour market, it is vital that you achieve a good level of English and maths. You will continue to develop your English and maths skills alongside your main qualification. If you have not achieved a Grade C in English and maths you will study these through resits or taking Functional Skills/GCSE appropriate to you.

Speaking and written skills to provide outstanding customer service
Good reading skills to ensure that you provide the correct treatments based upon client records
Ratios to mix peroxide and tint
Addition and subtraction to calculate profit and loss forecasts and manage stock and budget requirements effectively
Percentages to work out promotional discounts for your clients

Entry requirements

Commitment, passion and a drive to succeed in the hairdressing industry. Previous results or an initial assessment will determine which level of maths and English you will study.


A variety of assessment methods will be used. Your practical assessments will take place in our salons, the tutor will provide you with clear, constructive feedback through formative assessment to enable you to achieve high final grades.

Underpinning knowledge will be assessed through on-line examinations and assignment work.

Future opportunities

Upon completion of the Foundation Certificate in Hairdressing or Barbering you can progress onto the Intermediate Diploma in Hairdressing or Barbering.
