Engineering (Wind Turbine Maintenance) Level 3 at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai

Course description

Would you like a career in the Wind Turbine industry?

This course is part of the wind turbine apprenticeship at Coleg Llandrillo. Candidates who enroll on this course must be passionate about working in the wind industry and want to gain more knowledge and understanding of wind turbines.

Note: The course provides you with the necessary knowledge to work in the industry, however, it does not provide the necessary practical skills; these can only be obtained through relevant work experience or practical based courses.

Course content

The course is delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Practical workshop sessions
  • Classroom sessions
  • Student centred work
  • Demonstrations
  • Discussions
  • Work simulation
  • Virtual learning environment (MOODLE)
  • Tutorials

Candidates will be taught alongside apprentices currently working in the wind turbine industry and will be based in the Wind Turbine Training Centre at Rhos-on-Sea campus.

Entry requirements

  • Candidates must have completed a Level 3 Engineering qualification (or equivalent) and the EAL NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations (or equivalent)
  • Equivalent qualifications and/or experience will be considered on an individual case basis
  • Places on the programme are subject to interview

Assessment

The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Assignments
  • Short tests
  • Portfolio work

Each assignment contains various tasks graded at pass, merit or distinction.

Future opportunities

Candidates who are successful on this programme will, in September 2015, be eligible to enrol on the City and Guilds Level 2 NVQ Diploma Electrical Power Engineering – Wind Turbine.

This is a practical-based qualification giving the candidates the skills needed to work on wind turbines. The NVQ is currently only available on a part-time basis.

Alternatively candidates can apply for technician posts in the wind industry or apprenticeships.

If you wish to continue into higher education, you could progress onto a number of programmes at Grwp Llandrillo Menai.
